Punk Caterpillar: Bush School

Wild Nature for Kids

est. 2021

Held lovingly on the sacred lands of Dja Dja Wurrung Castlemaine, Victoria

Held and co-created by a super group of mentors from all walks of life. We are passionate about creating spaces for nature exploration, connection, adventure, slowing down and building community. Punk Caterpillar is a place where everyone can be themselves. We gather by the fire, we explore bushcraft, games, food, song, story, nature and natural play and  we have a whole lot of fun.

About Punk Caterpillar

Why Punk Caterpillar?

Punk Caterpillar is a place where kids get to be themselves. We value connection, having fun, sitting by the fire each week and learn through natural play, games, bush crafts, wildness and exploration outdoors.

We all need places where we feel safe to be ourselves. There's something about gathering around the fire that connects us to our innate selves, our shared ancestry and the kids feel it.  Each week builds on the next  as they discover that they explore and have their stories caught by a mentor crew who love being there with them. Something special happens during our time together. Its magic and it's felt. It shows up in the twinking eyes and  the smiles and enthusiasm of our kids and adults alike.

Punk Caterpillar nurtures confidence, curiosity, connection and relationships.
We are nurturing Cultural Repair, Village Building and Belonging.

Our nature connection mentoring draws on lineages of the 8 Shields and the teachings of Jon Young along with the professional, life skills and passions of our mentors, and the kids come in with so much knowledge of their own, we learn from each other, we learn togther, we discover and together we are growing a community, together.

A three camp and hike for teens and tweens, beginning near Castlemaine, with two nights camping at a private location. We will begin the hike near Chewton and hike to a private location where we will spend 2 nights, we will then hike back. A gentle challenge as we move toward longer hikes and other locations. Confidence building.

Children are curious and we learn through taking risks and through our mistakes.  We are here to catch stories and facilitate the kinds of experiences that create core memories and develop skills of confidence, awareness and curiosity in the nature. Through the care and planning and the absolute openness to emergent, child led and explorative activities, we are building programs built on passion and play with nature connection at the core. We trust our kids and our mentors to follow their innate and wild wisdom, skill share and create together. We are a place where everyone has the opportunity to be themselves.

Community

Punk Caterpillar is also about relationships.  Our relationship to self, other, the unseen and the more that human world.

Our community includes everyone who has been a part of Punk Caterpillar over the years,  once you are a part of the PUNKY CREW you're in for life.  We are Village Building and creating a space for belonging, growing alongside children of different ages. Our weekly programs are kid centred but we also hold seasonal celebration events where everyone is invited to share food, fire, celebration together making space for the adults to come play too. We also hold an annual Summer PUNK CATERPILLAR CAMPOUT that is also open to ALL AGES and draws in people from other place too.

We want to cultivate a culture where everyone has something to offer and everyone feels welcome.

Our community is guided by three agreements:

Look after ourselves.

We listen to our bodies, drink water, pick up our things, notice our limits, say no, wear a hat if its hot and jacket if its raining, we choose.

Look after one another.

We check in on others and help them if they are hurt, we listen to each other, include one another and respect other peoples choices. We look out for the people around us.

Look after Country.

We tread lightly, respect the places we spend time in and recognise that we are part of the living world and do our best to take good care of the land.

Learning through living

We don't have a rigid curriculum that tells children exactly what they should be doing every minute. Instead, we create rich environments and opportunities for children to  explore, experiment and follow their own curiosity. All our skills and craft based activities which we offer each week are opt in, same with our games and adventures. We begin and end with and opening and closing circle acknowledging Country, the directions, elements, the more than human world and each other.

There is space to engage with the mentors and the space in the way the feels resonant to each individual. We share food, learn about tools, plants and each other.

Learning isn't measured, it is embodied and felt. It goes beyond the mind.

Hands stained bright red from gathering and sorting wild berries
Children climbing and balancing on fallen logs in the bush
Children playing together in a muddy creek

It isn't always easy to describe what is happening, especially when we are so used to rigid models of learning based on measured outcomes.  We are doing something different here. We are doing something here that includes developing a sense of true inner knowing and choice, learning to take calculated risks and make assessments in real time and developing relationships with place, people and the more-than-human world.    There is much happening here that does not meet the eye, it's woven in rather that imposed on their experience. The outcomes are a long game, here we are seeding and developing the attributes of connection.

Risk, freedom and capability

We believe children need opportunities to experience real, manageable risk.

Things like climbing, scrambling, balancing and exploring wild and natural landscapes. Learning and using tools like carving knives, hatchets and saws. Making fires and learning how to cook with fire, make herbal medicines and natural dying building a relationship with the fire through these processes.  We are building awareness and capability through our games, adventures, communication and experiences of knowing one place.

These experiences ask children to pay attention, assess situations, make decisions and discover their own capabilities.

Our role is not to remove every risk it is to create environments where children can encounter challenge with appropriate support, develop judgement and gradually become more capable and confident in themselves.

Connection to nature

Punk Caterpillar is deeply rooted in the natural world.

We notice the seasons. We learn the plants and animals around us. We work with natural materials. We cook over fire. We watch the weather and aknowlege the directions and make note of which moon phase we are in.  We learn what the land is offering us at different times of year,  we tend and plant when we can.

Nature isn't something we visit for an hour before returning to the “real” learning. It's where so much of our learning emerges.

And through spending time in relationship with the natural world, we hope children develop a sense of care, wonder and belonging that stays with them.

Nectar Connector

Punk Caterpillar grew from my own experience of raising a wild, curious child who didn't always fit comfortably within the four walls of a classroom.

When my son was seven, it became clear that school wasn't a fit and after reading a book called "Free to Learn" by Peter Gray, this was confirmed.

It was covid time and we needed community more than ever and we wanted a place for our kids to feel freedom. Places where they could climb, jump, run, take risks, get muddy, make things, test themselves and learn through the whole body. I wanted a childhood that had room for wildness, imagination, challenge and connection to the natural world. We found an amazing program in the next town over called Forest & Free run by our friends Meg and Patrick also known as Artist as Family. We'd just found them and then they were off on an adventure and it quickly paused not long after. With their encouragement, the vision I held and what I could see my son needed as well as what our community needed, Punk Caterpillar was born, initially as an all day homeschool program. Over the past 5 years it's grown and changed shape a number of times.

What started as a search for something that would work for our wild kids slowly grew into Punk Caterpillar and has become community and a place where kids and adults alike can connect, learn, play, be themselves and belong to something.

I'm a qualified primary teacher with more than 20 years' experience working with children, along with a background in PE, yoga, nature connection and outdoor education. Over the years I've continued to learn through courses, mentorships and, most importantly, through spending time on Country with children and community.

My path has included permaculture, regenerative living, bushcraft, fire-making, nature philosophy, natural dyeing, carving, ceremony, seasonal practices and nature-based education. I've been fortunate to learn alongside wonderful mentors and communities who have deepened my understanding of what it means to live, learn and play in relationship with the natural world.

I believe children need real experiences. They need opportunities to take appropriate risks, solve problems, use their hands, make mistakes, get dirty, be bored, wonder, create and discover what they are capable of. They also need belonging, trusted adults and a community that sees and respects who they are and grow into who they are becoming.

Punk Caterpillar is my offering towards creating more of that. It is an offering for our kids and the future generations, it is an offering towards cultural repair and village building, it is an offering to the children within us all and a fire place we can return to. Once you are a part of the Punky Crew, you are a life long member.

At the heart of everything we do is a simple invitation: look after Ourselves, look after One Another and look after Country.

I'm passionate about creating spaces where everyone can reconnect with their wild selves, families can slow down and community can grow around the fire. Thanks for being here xx

The card that named us

How Punk Caterpillar got its name

A handmade birthday card that reads Happy Birthday Mum, with a small window cut into the front
Jimmy's birthday card, October 2021 - the front
Inside the card: a crayon drawing of a person standing by a tall pine tree under a sun and a heart, with a smiling orange caterpillar in the foreground
Inside - me by the pine tree, drawn by Jimmy

When I knew we were going to start a bush school, I was trying to come up with the right name. I was experimenting with whimsical names like "The School of Natural Play" and similar. It was October 2021, a couple of weeks before we started, and it was my birthday. My son Jimmy gave me a birthday card. On the front it said Happy Birthday, with a little window. When I opened the card, there was a picture of me by a pine tree. When I asked who the character in the foreground was, he replied:

“Oh, that's Punk Caterpillar.”

And in that moment, it was named. Our bush school would be Punk Caterpillar: Wild Nature for Kids - and Jimmy's picture became our logo.
